When you walk in the grocery store, where you actually go in the store really matters, if you’re wanting to focus on your HEALTH. One of the best rules-of-thumb for grocery shopping is to stick to the perimeter of the store. Why? It’s where most of the real food is located!!
Next time you head into the grocery store, just notice what types of foods are located where.
The aisles are full of food that is processed and chemically preserved. If it’s in a box or package, typically it no longer resembles the actual food product it once was. Chips no longer look like potatoes or corn, just to give one example. Bread is made with sifted flour that no longer has the nutrients it once did before it was processed. The transformation that processed foods undergo is a huge factor in making them less healthy, but equally detrimental are the additives. Dyes, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives take a massive toll on our bodies. Polysorbate 80, nitrites, red 40, aspartame, guar gum, emulsifiers, are just a few examples of the chemicals upon chemicals added to the so-called “food.” I’d argue it’s genuinely not food anymore!
So, stick to the perimeter for most of your sustenance…better yet, think about starting your own fall garden, or get a copy of our “Shopping Recommendations” from the front desk to get some ideas of local farmers and co-ops you can join!
