Ever heard of High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)? You might remember the commercials where the “all-American” family is having a picnic, where the mom innocently explains that HFCS is “just sugar” and that it does not matter where it comes from, “sugar is sugar.” Well, there are some pretty important things you need to know about HFCS, particularly things that never made the nightly news and things that really do effect you and your family’s health.

First, a study published in 2009 found that almost half of the food samples tested which contained HFCS also contained MERCURY! The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy’s Dr. David Wallinga, who co-authored both studies said, “Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much HFCS is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [U.S. FDA] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply.” It was found that the “caustic soda” ingredient used to chemically produce HCFS is where the mercury contamination occurs, too bad there is NO way to find out if what foods/drinks at the grocery store contain this mercury poisoned HFCS. Not to mention, the use of an ingredient with “caustic” in it’s name!

If that’s not scary enough to make you look twice at food labels…here’s something even more concerning. HFCS has now been approved for “re-naming” by the FDA. Unfortunately, you read that correctly. Products that contain HFCS-90 are now able to use the label “No High-Fructose Corn Syrup” when they actually do contain it! You can now be totally confused and unsure when you read “fructose” or “fructose syrup”, if perhaps you may be getting HFCS or not. And you can be even more unsure if that HFCS is one that contains mercury, a known horrifically neuro-toxic poison.

I say – All the more reason to stay away from processed food! You knew that was coming, didn’t you?!   *Hyperlinks in the article take you directly to the sources of these statements.
