If you have known me long, you have heard me talk about the wonders of coconut oil and how much I use it & love it. There are some really amazing qualities that not many people have heard about, so I wanted to loop you in!
The myth of “low fat” diets being healthy is just about completely dispelled, THANKFULLY! Let me explain to you how unhealthy that belief is! Quite simply – your brain is made of fat and it needs fat to function. Lowering cholesterol too much and eliminating fat intake is one of the scariest things you can do to your brain. But, consuming the right fats can improve your health!
Consuming coconut oil can boost metabolism, increase energy, decrease food consumption, reduce body weight and lower body fat mass, and improve brain function (even memory!). One study’s authors highly recommend using oils that contain medium chain fatty acids (MCFA’s), such as coconut oil, as a tool to drop extra abdominal fat, manage a healthy weight, and even as a way to treat obesity. And another added bonus of consuming organic coconut oil is that it tends to make us feel fuller for longer. Studies indicate that MCFA’s help increase feelings of fullness and lead to a reduction in calorie intake when compared to the same amount of calories from other fats.
In ’09, a study compared the effects of either 2 tbsp of coconut oil or 2 tbsp of soybean oil on a group of 40 women in 28 days. The group that ate the coconut oil had a decrease in abdominal fat & increased HDL “good” cholesterol levels! And, the soybean oil group actually showed an increase in belly fat, decreased HDL “good” cholesterol and increased LDL “ bad “ cholesterol.
