Think you’re hydrated because you’re drinking plenty of water? Hydration is more than water—it’s also about minerals!  Your body needs electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium to help maintain fluid balance, support nerve and muscle function, and help your cells actually use the water you drink. If you’re drinking lots of plain water but not getting enough minerals, you may still feel thirsty, tired, and even headachy.

Practical ways to hydrate well:
• Start your morning with a glass of water and minerals/electrolytes.
• Drink consistently throughout the day rather than waiting until you’re thirsty.
• Add mineral-rich foods: avocado, leafy greens, potatoes, bananas, high-quality sea salt, grass-fed meat, eggs, and dairy.
• If you sweat heavily, exercise, work outdoors, or are feeling sick, pay extra attention to replacing fluids and electrolytes.
• A simple check: pale-yellow urine generally indicates good hydration.

And what about your morning coffee? Coffee and other caffeinated beverages contain water, but they should definitely NOT be your hydration strategy! Caffeine has a “diuretic” effect, which actually increases your urine production, especially when drinking caffeine in larger amounts. So, NOPE, you don’t get to count your coffee toward the water your body needs. 😉

God designed our bodies with an incredible need for balance.  Give your body what it needs—water, minerals, nourishing food, sunshine and rest—and let’s get well and stay well!
