Our posture really matters because it effects more than you can imagine.  Your posture effects your lung capacity; just try taking a deep breath while slumping then try it with good posture.  Posture effects our digestion as well, along with brain function, balance, and energy levels.  This graphic shows just how much stress something called “Forward Head Posture” puts on our frame or skeletal system.  A person’s head weighing normally 10-12 lbs with zero degrees of forward head posture weighs exactly that!  Now, just tilting your head forward of your shoulder just 15 degrees turns that 10-12 lbs into more like 27 lbs of weight your body is carrying. Imagine if you held a bowling ball up by your shoulder then began to move that bowling ball out away from your body…how much heavier would it seem?  How much harder would it be to hold?  My point today is this: be aware of your posture during any activity.  If you look down at your phone or tablet for long periods of time, begin to hold it up in front of you.  Notice the same thing if you sit in bed reading a book with your head tilted down and forward.  The neck stretches that we often give to patients here at Clearview are designed to COUNTERACT this very activity!  If you need another copy of those stretches, let us know!  Because your posture matters…
